Some Hints on Inspecting the List

·        Surnames and forenames

Names were often recorded by pen and in longhand some ninety years ago. Spelling mistakes occur in certain names.

·        Addresses

Over the years many streets in Belfast have been renamed, redeveloped or demolished entirely.  Spelling here also can be a problem.

·        Personal Details

Some entries give quite extensive information with an address, the name of the parents, wife and sometimes a civilian occupation and even the school attended.

Other entries give basic information with only the places of birth, enlistment and area of residence recorded.

·        The Navy and the Air Force

As a major port numerous Belfast men and women made their living at sea and many lost their lives in Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine (Merchant Navy). Others died whilst serving the Royal Flying Corps and, from 1 April 1918, the new Royal Air Force.

·        Casualties in Overseas Armies

We have included the names of Belfast born servicemen who died whilst serving with the forces of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South African forces. We would be anxious to learn of other such individuals and indeed those Belfast men and women who died in this period in the army of the United States of America.
